Serial entrepreneur, inventor, mentor, polymath and overall weird guy.

I have founded or co-founded twenty-six technology companies, co-founded three NGOs, and hold six patents as inventor or co-inventor. I give talks around the world about the social impact of artificial intelligence, and I have written three books about it.

The project I am proudest of is not a company. When the war started, my wife and I worked on From Ukraine to Portugal, helping around twelve thousand Ukrainian refugees settle here. The EU was kind enough to notice.

I work remotely from a small city on the Atlantic coast of central Portugal. I am a husband and a father of two.

I also have a habit of taking on projects that are difficult to justify on paper. One of them involved crossing the Sahara in a 1991 Fiat Panda bought for almost nothing. It made it. I am still slightly surprised.

What I actually do now

Most of my working time goes into AI architecture and advisory through Entropic Ventures: designing systems for organisations that have decided to build with AI rather than experiment with it, and building enough of each system to prove the design holds. The speaking and the books come from the same place. If you cannot explain the thing to the people who have to use it, you have not finished designing it.
